    Hi Courtney,
These heavy weather tactics should only be a back up measure in the range of good seaman ship procedures.

Heading into gig storms is excusable as part of an ocean race were contestants have satellite locaters, radio relay vessels and lots of emergency backup.
But good seamanship should involve selecting routers and sailing times that minimise the chance of contact with such storms. This may mean not sailing in certain areas at all.
Just as one does to avoid pirates
But for some one wanting to take long sea passages there is plenty of voyages that are reasonably safe.

One need to know how to cope in heavy weather circumstances just like one needs to know how to use a sextant in case your electronics are inactivated by electrical storms.

    Regards

Thanks for your reply Barry. I have none of your experience and am just
trying to get a handle on the best possible preparation as I do hope to
cross some big water someday :-)

      Cordially,
      Courtney
