What do you mean 'failed completely'?

What does the amount of work to install something have to do with
whether the maintenance of the item will require a lot of work and
    expense?

Some things don't require any work, and some require a lot to install.
Our Max Prop was difficult to install because the directions weren't
very good, but once installed it doesn't require much more maintenance
than any other prop (keep barnacles off and grease sometimes).

There's no installation to a hand-held GPS to speak of - we put a
mounting bracket on the pedestal and we plug it in or get new
    batteries for it - NBD.

There's no reason to get sarcastic.
