Cutter's rule, of course! :)
As is true with every other selection, the rig that works best for you will
depend on your choice of sailing. Each has its advantages and
disadvantages.
In a nutshell:
Sloop - Advantage: simple (KISS is good!). Disadvantage: difficult to
balance, large sails.
Cutter - Advantage: simple, flexible, easy to balance. Disadvantage:
foredeck clutter, extra strings to pull
Ketch - Advantage: smaller sails, shorter rig, easy to balance.
Disadvantages: mizzen sail does not contribute when beating or running, more
rig to maintain, more topside weight, more strings to pull.
Yawl - Advantage: mizzen is a good steering sail, pretty. Disadvantage: see
Ketch
Schooner - Advantage: classic beauty! Disadvantage: won't sail as well as
most other boats of the same size (Though Bluenose was never beaten, was
she?).
Gaff - Advantage: very flexible. Disadvantage: weight aloft can be
dangerous, lots more running rigging required (though some standing rigging
can be eliminated).
Cat - Advantage: simplest of them all. Disadvantage: very unbalanced when
the weather gets up.
There's no one "perfect" rig for all conditions. You'll see more sloops
than anything else, because they cost less and they're simple. For casual
sailing, they're probably the best. If you have longer horizons in mind,
read a few books. I always recommend "Desirable and Undesirable
Characteristics of Offshore Yachts" which has been in print for years and
contains a lot of excellent information for the future cruiser.
