    In a hurricane the wind is in a circular pattern. If you are in the
    navigable quadrant the storm blows you out of the way when you run before
    it. If you are anywhere else the storm will run over you or suck you into
    it. A gale is a storm where you might get some relief faster by laying to a
    sea anchor. The storm is linear so to speak and will move on.
