1st time poster here and have never deployed a sea anchor in a "real
life" situation. however, pardey's book, "storm tactics handbook,"
is an awfully persuasive presentation of what has and hasn't worked
for them and others. they recommend heaving to with just a trysail
or triple reefed main while putting out a slightly undersized sea
anchor with snatchblocked second line that places the anchor off to
the side of the bow. they've sat through a few hurricanes in small
boats using this method and allege that it was almost boring. two
things that they mention about running before the wind/storm that
stuck with me, one is that it's a lot of work with plenty of
examples where it ultimately failed as a storm tactic and two is
that you also end up running with the storm which means that you
remain exposed/in the extreme weather longer than if you heave to
and let the snot pass over you. v. joe
