I have heard (on a video on sailing which had some pretty big names
but I no longer remember which ones) that fin keel boats have great
difficulty heaving to properly.
We have practiced heaving to (we have a modified full keel) and it
works very nicely although we've only done it in moderate winds and
seas as we try not to be out in really bad weather.
I personally would not like to lie ahull from the sound of it.
We do have a sea anchor but have not practiced with it. After reading
Pardee and Earl H. and the book on sea anchors, and another one (Heavy
Weather Sailing?) which talks about pitchpoling etc., we decided on
the sea anchor rather than a drogue. I'd like to get a storm trysail,
but mostly I'd like to stay out of situations where I'm likely to need
one.
