Yes, if the waves are breaking over the boat I will turn and run as fast as
I have to and avoid that. I have never been on a boat that is strong enough
to withstand water breaking on deck. That includes the large commercial
ships. I have been on fin keel boats in much worse conditions then the full
keel boats I have sailed and only rolled a full keel boat completely over.
Granted the full keel boat was smaller but I suspect that the center of
gravity is higher on the full keel boat and when the boat is on her side the
next wave has a much larger surface area to grab and complete the roll. The
fin keel boat on the other hand has very little in the way of keel surface
to grab with the next wave to complete the roll. The other side of the story
is that the fin keel boats run downwind so fast that I think pitch poling is
the greater fear. Your idea for a drag is a good one and I would try that.
Next time I hope to avoid the really bad weather.
