My daughters were 9 and 11 (4th and 6th grade). My wife and I were 45. We
did a year long "sabattical" voyage from San Diego to Milwaukee by truck,
then to Georgetown in the Bahamas. You can see all the pictures and read
all about it at www.indiscipline.org <http://www.indiscipline.org> They
were in the Calvert school and we have a great "school picture" on the site,
taken at the Georgetown Cruisers Regatta. This route was a compromise we
worked out (I wanted to go to the South Pacific). In fact, we had a
wonderful year and none of us would trade it for anything. Start coastal!
Now I have a 25 year old Catalina 25 and I sail nearly every day. I am
preparing for a month long single hand voyage San Diego to Santa Barbara
Island in August. My girls are now 15 and 13 and have busy summers planned,
but they, my first mate, and our 2 little dogs will join me in Catalina for
a week. This boat is bone simple, cheap to own, fun to sail, perfect for
single handing, parts are available, and it is great for coastal cruising
(also trailerable though I don't have the trailer or truck - maybe someday).
It's keeping all my skills current. I can't wait to take off on my own
adventure, August 2.
In 10 years my wife and I will go on our next great cruise, currently
planning San Diego to the Carribean, then cross the pond and explore Europe.
I'll be retired and the kids "should" be out of college. At that time we'll
sell the house and I'll be thinking of something like a Pacific Seacraft 34
or 37 - maybe even a 31. I really want to circumnavigate but it may have to
be without her on at least some of the longer passages. We'll see and time
will tell. If something happens and we can't do it, at least we are really
enjoying the path we are on right now. I love my little Indiscipline III.
If I can take winds to 35 and seas to 8 in the Catalina 25 while
singlehanding I'll be ready for rougher conditions in bigger boats later.
Good luck!

I'll be doing something like that as well. I remember when I first learned
how to do that, and its still something I really enjoy doing. Then they'll
be able to roll up their charts and save them as mementos of their journeys.
At what age did you start sailing with your kids?

One of the cool things I had my kids do on our cruise was make their own
chart of the places we've been (once we crossed the Gulf Stream). I
helped
them rough in the major islands and they plotted our course.
