I am very curious about the winch breaking. Do you know if the shaft was
made of sinted bronze? Merriman-Holbrook made some that way some time back
and they were a disaster. I guess it doesn’t take much to impress you.
Unless the sextant has a broken part it is very easy to straighten it out,
adjust and then check it with cylinders. Usually the parts that break are
the legs or the screws that adjust the mirrors, any good machine shop can
make more. If you break the pin for the tangent screw you will need to get
one from the manufacture or know someone with a jewelers lathe that has a
lot of patience. One of my sextants was damaged in shipping back from a
delivery trip and I had to have parts made to fix it. In fact I had them
make extra adjusting screws for the Heath because once you setup the machine
the 2nd, 3rd etc parts are just pennies more. So if you need mirror springs
or adjusting screws let me know, just pay the postage and they are yours. I
think the only thing that impresses me is the man who can repair a
chronometer. That is the only thing on the boat that I don’t have a chance
of fixing. Unlike Capt Slocum of the Spray I don’t think boiling mine in oil
will help it.
All the best;
Bob
