David;
My first trans-Atlantic was when I was 21 and the list of must haves was
based on a series of trips I made starting at age 13, from Rhode Island to
greater and greater distances until I got so far north in Canada that
England was to be the next stop. That boat was 22’ long and you could not
bring anything that you did not need, no space. I had no engine, radio,
self-steering (the boat would balance by herself) or electronics. My
navigation was with sextant, taffrail log and Timex wristwatch. That was one
of the best trips I ever had. Since then I have sailed to Africa, Brazil,
Spain, Portugal and a lot of Europe, etc. Over the years the amount of gear
that I considered necessary has grown and the size of my boat has grown.
Still I think that I have less gizmos and more tools then most liveaboards.
I only add to my list after seeing some one else use it or I used it on a
delivery trip. I can’t think of many things that I dropped overboard from
frustration. You want to make a list, go sailing and see what you reach for
then buy it for your boat.
All the best;
Bob
