[world-cruising] Has anyone had experience with "not marine" car stereo in a boat?

I'm looking to install an AM / FM / CD player in my 39 foot
sailboat. I see marine stereos listed in the catalogs, but am
wondering how necessary these are. I'm planning on mounting the unit
in the cabin, out of the way of any wet weather.

Has anyone used a normal car stereo or even a boom box in this
application? Do the units last, or does the salt air destroy the
electronics? Is there any reason to go "marine grade" if I don't
plan on mounting the unit on deck? I'm especially concerned about
the mechanical parts of a typical CD player.

    Thanks
