I just attended a survey of a five year old blue water sailboat
yesterday, and am confused about the results.
After nosing around the interior, the surveyor noticed that the
bulkheads separating the ice chest from the stove area, and the stove
area from the sink area had pulled away from the hull. These are 2
foot tall bulkheads that essentially make up the ice chest and the
sink cabinet. The two inch wide tabs that cemented these bulkheads
to the hull had completely separated from the hull from top to bottom.
Further along in the survey, the outside of the hull around this area
showed much higher than normal moisture levels than the rest of the
boat. The rest of the hull was completely normal. This area showed
no signs of damage, repair or impact. In fact, the outside hull
looked new. Tapping with a hammer did not show any delamination or
voids.
The owner and broker could not shed any light on the issue, and
indicated that they knew of no damage or repair to that area. The
rest of the boat was in very very good condition.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? What could be causing
this? The surveyor, broker and factory rep were all baffled.
Thanks
