heavy 60ft sailboat preparing to leave winched in the anchor
chain until the bow was down to one foot of freeboard, and I
happened to be looking at the chain when the links all elongated
from the strain. The skipper had to hacksaw off 60-80 feet of
chain, but it would no longer have fit the windlass anyway. It was
a manual windlass; an electric one would have tripped the
breaker long before.
In my 25ft Vertue class sloop I was anchored in shallower water
near the Fisheries building, but when I got work teaching at the
Community College I was allowed to pick up one of their
moorings. When hurricane season approached, I dived to check
the mooring and found the chain was nearly worn through.
Fisheries gave me the replacement supplies and I installed
them myself. I like a good night's sleep.
