So many people have pointed out that a well-found boat can take
more than the crew. For a while I cruised in a vee-bottom (aka
"hard-chine") boat which as a result had a quick motion. Even
boats passing at no-wake harbor speeds nearly rolled me out of
bed.
Later I had a Giles-designed Vertue whose motion was very
gentle. I made no changes to the standard deck set-up:
halliards remained cleated at the mast, no furling headsail, I
even removed the jiffy reefing lines to reduce chafe to the
mainsail. I did get a new main with no battens as I'd had trouble
from them in the other boat. (An existing sail could be re-cut.)
In tropical waters some means of shade is important when
under way. Since I had a steering vane, I sat under the dodger or
went below. I was single-handing in the '60s when ships were
less on automatic pilot, and I wouldn't recommend single any
more, not to mention it can be lonely.
