We are now outfitting our new Fountaine-Pajot Belize 43 catamaran for
cruising so we can sail into the sunset sometime in the next year or
so. Having just picked up a 10' Caribe rigid bottom inflatable at
the Seattle Boat Show for our dinghy, we are now looking for a
suitable outboard motor for it. Our primary concerns are reliability
and servicability outside the U.S. with most other factors, such as
cost and fuel economy, secondary to those. After a little comparison
shopping, we are leaning towards a 15 hp two-stroke Yamaha as our
motor of choice.
However, we can't seem to get the same story from any two dealers -
one says don't even consider a two-stroke while another says that's
the only way to go. The last salesman we talked to said that the
increase in fuel economy of a four-stroke more than outweighed the
slightly lower cost, lighter weight, and simpler engine in a two-
stroke.
Does anyone out there actually using their outboards have a
recommendation about two vs. four stroke engines?
Any feelings one way or the other about Yamahas?
Any other advice about outboards would be appreciated, such as
electric vs. pull start, fuel considerations, etc.
Thanks,
John & Lela Bickford
