As Peter Oliver's news from Venezuela indicates, piracy and similar violent seagoing crime is a legitimate concern for cruising sailors in a number of areas around the world.
Southeast Asia is a particular hotspot for piracy and armed robbery. Violent crime against boats and ships is a nearly daily occurence in the region. For regular reports on pirate attacks, as well as details on hazard-prone areas, see the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Centre: http://www.iccwbo.org/ccs/imb_piracy/weekly_piracy_report.asp
Obviously, this does not mean it is impossible to safely sail anywhere in Southeast Asia, but proper attention to voyage routing, timing and appropriate port stops is critical to avoiding particularly dangerous areas.
