    Brian,

    If I remember correctly, this is the symbol for a rotating current. The
    times and length of the vector (arrows) represents the time as well as the
    direction and strength of the current. You can determine the direction
    (set) by looking at the nearest compass rose. The length is the strength or
    more properly drift rate (knots per hour) of the current. Take the distance
    and look at the nearest latitude scale.

    Going to Greece - get the local charts and be careful to set your GPS to the
    local chart datum and world model. There are enough differences to make
    life interesting.
