I have a couple of friends that are preparing to cross the pond heading for Greece. In reviewing their charts, they came across a symbol that we can't fully understand.
It is a current diagram (as per chart 1) that sort of resembles a compass rose. There is a circle in the middle with 12 arrows radiating out, labelled 0 - 11. The arrows are different lengths.
It is shown at: http://pollux.nss.nima.mil/NAV_PUBS/Chart1/Sec_H.pdf under "Supplementary National Symbols" "t". (very last entry at the bottom of page 4)
We have made several assumtions based on common sense, but can't find any definative text to confirm or correct our thoughts.
Can anyone help us with this? What do the numbers 0 -11 relate to? Does the length of the arrows relate to the strength of the current? Is there a way to determine the speed of the current in Knots?
Thanks for any insights or links to info,
Brian Timmins S/V Calico Jack
P.S. I'm on Daily Digest so I won't be able to quickly respond unless you send it direct to me.
