    Hi Lynn,

We have been living aboard in the Med for the past 4 years. Medical
constraints have kept us in Spain so far but this means that we are
now very familiar with this country and would be able to answer many
    of your friends questions.

We have many US cruiser friends around the Med. who of course have a
US perspective on the Med. and our Med Liveaboard group might be of
    use to them.

I will try to answer some of your questions here but if I can help
    further please email me.

    > Their questions at present are:
    > 1. Are prices as high as I have heard in that area of
    > the world?

This is a bit ambiguous for me I'm afraid being a Brit. But to
    give
you some idea, our 10mt. 6 month, winter, berth in Barcelona cost
around $1500 inc. water and elec.

    > 2. Is it possible to work in the country you are
    > wintering over?

The situation varies greatly depending on the country and your
skills. It is usually possible to get some "boat" work in the
    larger
marinas but the competition is often fierce.

    > 3. What are the best places (best being safe, least
    > expensive, warm, ability to work on the boat, with
    > things to do and see) to winter over?

This is not something that needs a lot of pre-planning as the
situation changes year to year. You will be able to get answers to
this question from any "Yachty" you meet that has been in the
    Med
for a year or so. Barcelona is the favoured Spanish wintering hole
because it is such a nice city and there are usually 100 odd
cruisers in for the winter which makes for a good community. There
    are cheaper places though.

    > 4. How have the current world events effected the
    > cruising, carrying a U.S. passport, and flying a U.S.
    > flag in that part of the world?

I have not so far heard of any problems of this sort.

    > 5. Any places to absolutely avoid and why?

    Libia for sure :¬)

I think you can assure your friends that they will be as safe in the
    Med as anyone else.

    David
