we use a lap top computer on board, the captain spends an average of
5 hours a day on it plugged into 12 volt boat power, he uses it for
his work. aside from that, i use it to write e mail and stories, we
also watch dvd movies with it, and have various digital chart
programs that we use for passage planning etc. when we need internet
access we hook up at an internet cafe, download whatever we need,
then bring it home and look at it in the comfort of our boat. i dont
do my yahoo group stuff on it, i look at all my group mail on a
regular computer in the internet cafes, this keeps arguments over
computer time to a minimum.
we are powered entirely by solar and wind, but since we were struck
by lightning last month, our wind generator is out.
since then, we have had to rely entirely on solar, and its no
problem. i dont know the exact watts or amps per panel, but we have
three of them, approx. 14"x48". we use a cigarette lighter type
outlet and plug the computer in using its 12 volt power cord.
we have 2 deep cycle house batteries, voltage regulators for both
wind and solar. no engine, no alternator, the generator is a
lightweight and portable 1000 watt honda that i use to run my sewing
machine, and the occasional power tool.
we dont use ssb for e mail, but have some friends that do. one was
unfortunate in that he was anchored next to us and had his laptop
hooked up to the ssb when the lightning struck, it and fried both
his ssb and computer.
