Those of you with the experience, how have you found
ways to do things to keep busy onboard? What are some
of the things you have done?

It may sound silly, but lack of entertainment was one of the things I missed
the most on our year long cruise (with children). I suppose many people are
going to write that you are never bored, always have things to do: cooking,
socializing, hiking/exploring, 4 hours per day listening to weather
forecasts, trying to find fresh vegtables or meat, fixing things, and
reading. While I didn't expect a year in Club Med, I didn't realize how
busy we were going to be all the time. It was rare to find yourself
actually having "fun". People need this. Also, you can only read so long
while you are cooped up in a rolly anchorage with 3 foot breaking waves
waiting out a frontal passage. Here's what we did.

We had 2 laptop computers and a LAN. We played a lot of cooperative and
role-playing video games. A good game like Diablo II or Dungeon Seige will
take 2 people a month to play (or longer). This was a usual late night
entertainment. The kids had a Nintendo 64 with lots of silly games hooked
up to a little TV/VCR, plus they had Gameboys. These made long passages go
by a lot faster for them (plus of course they had schoolwork to do). Of
course we all had cartons of books and traded these at paperback exchanges
    we found everywhere cruisers stop.

Most cruisers we met had plenty of PC games. We had a LAN and could play
cooperative games together - a lot more fun.

For a moment of pure "fun" we all had our toys. I had a stunt kite, the
kind with 2 strings that you can make climb/dive, fly in loops, and do all
kinds of things. I spent many, many hours flying this on beaches and
docksides all over. It's the kind of thing that any sailor would love, and
is a magnet for meeting people (especially kids). Everyone loves kites.

Be sure to take something that's not work or exercise and is pure, 100%,
    fun.

I rarely fly the kite anymore now that we're home - too busy! But I have
tons of fun with my sailboat.
