Jason - Flashing jewelry and acting like a tourist can indeed make one a
target for crime in the Third World just as in New York City or Rome. You would
think that fancy new yachts might be more of a target than older, worn boats.
But, thoughtless behavior is more inviting than the look of your craft. For
example, a worn boat that has it's dingy and motor in the water overnight is going
to as much of a target as a new one. Any person that travels the world in any
boat will be viewed as wealthy by a Third Worlder - and we are wealthy by
comparison, even if broke. That does not necessarily make us the target of crime.
I believe the best policy is to show respect and be a friendly traveler
rather than as a "Tourist" whenever possible.
