Tristan da Cunha was originally claimed and
garrisoned by the British when Napoleon was
exiled to St. Helena, its nearest inhabited
neighbour, because they were concerned that
the French might use it as a base from which
to launch a rescue operation. The garrison
was abandoned when Napoleon died, but a few
of the soldiers had grown to like it there.
They received permission to remain, and other
folks from various parts of Europe joined them
over the years. Today, there is a picture of
the Queen in every house.
While St. Helena, pop. 4500, lacks a sustainable
economy because of its remoteness, and receives
development aid from the UK, Tristan is self-
supporting. It has a modern cannery, and exports
fishery products to the UK and USA. The men are
master mariners, fishing from open longboats with
large outboards, on days when weather permits.
They also receive income from licensing a South
African company to fish in their waters from
large trawlers.
There is no airport, and I'm not sure the
Tristanians would want one. These are wonderful
people living in a magnificent place. In a very
different way from Montana, this is "Big Sky
Country." And in both places, I found a people
united in their pride in and protectiveness of
their land and environment.
