Its not a "sure thing" (yet), but a lot more than a rumor. As of June of
this year, by international agreement, it is no longer necessary for
national regulatory authorities to require mode code testing for amateur
licenses or access to specific amateur frequencies. I believe some countries
(Australia & Switzerland) have already dropped the requirement, but how long
it will take the FCC to follow suite is anybody's guess. Mine is within one
year.

Keep in mind that its not hard as you might think and is also quite fun to
learn. Its kind of like learning some obscure old-school knots you know
you'll never use but are cool to know just because...
