From the time of the Virginia Company's foothold in the nation to the
Pilgrims our entire nation was founded on greed and selfishness. It is a
problem that is deeply rooted in our very history, not just in the
healthcare system. Ask the Native American tribes. There have been a lot
of wrongs committed by our ancestors, not just ourselves. I think the only
major immigrant founder we had who was remotely concerned with getting his
lot honorably was William Penn, and he died a pauper in England after the
people who came to America after him decided that their way was better and
removed him from power. President Andrew Jackson defied the Supreme Court
and allowed the state of Georgia to 'remove' the Cherokee from their country
(the Cherokee even had a Constitution that mirrored the US Constitution, a
national newspaper, and established towns at the time), and inspired the
Trail of Tears. This all so Georgia could plant cotton on Indian land.
I guess a lot is going to have to change in our country, not just the policy
of our government, to create a caring culture that is not a culture so
regulated by the government that we are no longer free. All of us are going
to have to overcome 200 years of American history and I'm not sure how much
European history that has made us what we are as people. Think about the
real reason that a college kid decides to go through medical school,
internship, and residency to become a doctor. Its expensive financially and
socially. If you take away the financial motivation, will doctors become as
difficult for communities to find as teachers? If you take away the
financial competition between drug companies, will pharmaceutical advances
stop happening?
Just a question. Believe me, as a mom of two small kids, health care is
always a concern! I worry constantly, as since we're currently on one
income due to my student status, we can't afford to cover the whole family,
and the prospect of paying for medication is quite scary. Luckily we're
relatively healthy, at the moment!
