Joe, check out my web site www.indiscipline.org
<http://www.indiscipline.org> My family and I cruised our powerboat 5000
miles from Milwaukee to the Bahamas. There's lots of information on the
site to help you.
We used a Verizon cell phone connected to a laptop computer to get email.
It did not work in the Bahamas or offshore, but it worked in most places.
Also doubled as our on-board phone.
I notice you mentioned Lake Michigan. Where are you starting your voyage
and when? Consider looking at my web page and I'll send you a copy of my
free book if you are going through the Great Lakes, Trent-Severn canal, Erie
canal, Atlantic ICW to Florida, across the gulfstream to the Bahamas and on.
I'd strongly recommend that your first book is "A Gentlemans Guide to
Passages South" by Bruce Van Sant. It covers in detail how to get from
Florida to Venezuela while having fun and not getting bashed in miserable
seas along the way.
Don't try to do this trip FAST. Take your time, relax, and enjoy. It was 1
year for us Milwaukee to the Bahamas and back and it was still too fast a
pace.

Subject: [world-cruising] Introduction
Hello everyone,
My name is Joe and I am a 30 year old man who is now in the beginning stages
of planning an adventure of a lifetime.
I have recently purchased a sea ray 410 sundancer and am planning to cruise
the Bahamas, Virgin Islands and overall Caribbean. My goal is to make it to
Trinidad, but I I would be happy if I just made it to the Virgin Islands.
I am familar with "boating" but am a rookie to "cruising". The longest
trips I have loged have been across Lake Michigan.
I want to do this upcoming trip right! I was hoping to get some feedback on
all aspects of Caribbeanb cruising including: publications, places to go,
places not to go, gear, seamanship, maintenance, electronics.
One specific question that I have is what is the most affordable way to
communicate via phone / email. Should I invest in a KVH track net system
for the boat?? Or is there a wireless / cellular service that will have
service in the Caribbean / Bahamas area? Is a satellite phone necessary or
a good idea?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated and will be taken very seriously.
Thank you for your time,
joe
ps, if anyone is interested in calling please do not hesitate.
