.:.Another popular communications option for cruisers that Rick didn't
    .:.mention is Amateur (HAM) radio.
    .:.--------- (shame on you O.M. ) -- (brotherly grin)
    .:.

Actually I did think of that, but thought I'd hit the other modes first,
particularly since it sounded like they were really looking for web based
products. Of course, if he went the HF route he couldn't send in
manuscripts via a Ham link (has to be non-commercial), would have to be
    Marine SSB and SailMail.

There is a kind of x-y grid going on here, with cost on one axis and
    difficulty on the other.

Low cost, low difficulty is writing a letter and posting it.
Lower cost, low difficulty would be PocketMail and landlines or internet
    cafes.
Medium cost, low difficulty would be CelTel.
High cost, low difficulty would be Satellite.
High Cost, High difficulty is Ham, and
High cost, moderate difficulty would be Marine SSB.

(cost being initial equipment buy-in as well as any per minute, monthly or
    membership charges)

There is actually a z axis at work here, too. Which is something like a
convenience factor. Satellite is high (web browsing, high throughput, as
much time as you can afford to pay for), Ham & SSB are low (no web browsing,
very low through put, restrictions on amount of time you can be connected
per session). The rest are in between.
