Hi Joe,
Another popular communications option for cruisers that Rick didn't
mention is Amateur (HAM) radio.
--------- (shame on you O.M. ) -- (brotherly grin)
As Rick will probably agree, it's not difficult ~AT ALL~ to get your
general class HAM license these days. The required code speed has been
reduced to a ~very~ low level and the current written knowledge test for
the general class license is really quite easy.
Now, for Rick's class of license, that's another matter (envious grin &
still studying).
The license and an inexpensive HF radio and antenna system will also put
you in touch with a LOT of people. There are regularly scheduled "nets"
of HAM boaters and shore based stations for passing all sorts of
valuable information and messages. Including access into the e-mail
portion of the web.
Also, if you were to use a marine HF radio to provide yourself with
marine SSB, many of these radios will also work on Amateur bands.

> One specific question that I have is what is the most affordable way
to communicate via phone / email. Should I invest in a KVH track net
system for the boat?? Or is there a wireless / cellular service that
will have service in the Caribbean / Bahamas area? Is a satellite phone
necessary or a good idea?
