Joe,
I agree with Rick's first comment. The first thing a good cruiser
does when stepping aboard is forgetting the ways of the land. That
includes what you consume, how you communicate and also your
affinity for land (such as when passage making).
If you're willing to rely mostly on e-mail for personal / business
use (and communicate with other cruisers through HF and VHF voice
nets), and you already have a computer onboard, then you might
consider getting an amateur radio license.
With a good modem (http://www.scs-ptc.com/controller.html#ptc2ex),
computer, the free airmail program (http://www.airmail2000.com/) and
HF radio (http://www.icomamerica.com/marine/ssb/icm802main.html)
you're set for communicating anywhere, anytime.
This sort of a solution is expensive upfront but costs nothing
afterwards for personnal use (or about 200$ per year for sailmail
which allows commercial e-mail traffic http://www.sailmail.com )
It might be overkill if you're only going for 6 months, or might be
well worth it if you decide to make cruising a permanent lifestyle.
Cheers, Marc

track net system for the boat?? Or is there a wireless / cellular
service that will have service in the Caribbean / Bahamas area? Is
a satellite phone necessary or a good idea?
