I'm on digest and have been reading this thread with
quite a bit of interest. All the postings so far have
been addressed, or seem to address, U.S. companies.
That brings up at least a couple of questions in my
mind.
1. Is it possible for a U.S. citizen to get medical
insurance through a non U.S. company? If so, would
there be any benefits as in lower premiums, better
service, etc. when we are cruising outside U.S.
waters?
2. It's been said that we are often better off to
stuff out mattresses with $$$, Euros, etc. rather than
pay the extremely high U.S. insurance company
premiums. Is the service in other countries _really_
that inexpensive or are we "hearing" what we _want_ to
hear and not what is fact? I know prescription drugs
are often much less expensive in foreign countries.
However we often hear about them not being FDA
approved and that the strength may be less or at least
different than what is actually prescribed. Some of
that I can understand. Other parts I've begun to see
as just drug industry scare tactics to get the U.S. to
pay higher prices. Right now, I think Illinois and
maybe Vermont or one of the NE states are going to
Canada to get less expensive drugs as are many
individuals. What is the _real_ story about the
availability, prices, service, and quality of medical
(including eye and dental) services in countries
_other_ than the U.S.for those that choose to go
uninsured for those things? Anyone have knowledge or
experience they would care to share?
Thanks.
Jason
