Thought I would toss in my 2 cents worth here.
"Cruising World" magazine did a piece on medical insurance within
this past year. One of their points was that some "international"
insurance programs exclude the USA due to high cost of care and
litigation issues.
Many cruisers have commented that the cost of care in many of our
cruising grounds is so affordable that an insurance claim is just not
worth the hassle. They just pay the bill, and save the insurance for
a really big problem. This same argument prompts some to go without
coverage.
OPINION:
Medical costs are high and going higher because these costs are most
always paid by insurance. Nobody in the loop has a reason to
constrain the costs. Recent example: MRI scan with insurance
$1600.00, when I told them I didn't have insurance --- $896.00.
Education is another example of no cost containment due to third
party payers. Most college kids have grants, loans, scholarships to
pay for school. The very rich don't care, the poor are supported by
the government (our tax dollars). The schools don't care where the
money comes from and in a sick way the higher the cost the more
noteworthy the school becomes.
