ICOM, KENWOOD, JRC are probably best. More importantly, don't take a Yeasu
or a TenTec to sea. The former has (had) a cast aluminum heat sink case
that rained conductive powder down on your radio's insides when mixed with
salt air. The latter is a great radio, but very finicky and difficult to
repair, particularly away from US shores.
Nor would I go with a top of the line model to start off with. Kenwood 140s
are great at sea. The 440s even better. But much above that level and the
whizbang stuff is difficult to deal with at sea. You can buy two used 440s,
for instance, and keep one for back-up and still not pay what you would for
a new out of the box top end machine.
