    Hi John

It really depends what you want to do with the camera.

If you haven't been into cameras for some years then you are clearly not
a devotee of photography so sounds like you need something in the point
and click range. For versatility you won't go past the Olympus c740UZ.
The 10x optical zoom is great but you need a very steady hand (or high
speed exposure) at full zoom to avoid obvious shake on the shots.

If you want postcard prints or to put snaps on a website then 3
megapixels is perfectly adequate. You need more if you want high
    quality enlargements.

The small Canon A70 or A80 are brilliant for the price.

If you want something digital which is more akin to a real SLR then look
at the Canon 300D Rebel. About twice the price of the Olympus but
    amazing value.

As Bryan says .... digital really means you need a computer (although
there are some printers on the market that allow you to print direct
    from memory card).

If you decide to go digital my advice is to pick one of the above which
suits your price range (don't forget to include the extra memory card,
batteries and charger if not standard accessory) and get shooting.
On-line research of digital cameras is the path to madness or blindness
    or both.

ps I spent about 2 years researching until I fell in love with the
appearance of the Fuji S5000 and bought it on a whim. It's great but I
wish I had spent all the time I spent researching taking photos.
