    John,

In my opinion, digital is the only way to go. Most film cameras today rely
heavily upon electronic innards, which are just as vulnerable as those in
digital cameras. Digital cameras are generally smaller, lighter, and easier
    to carry and stow.

That said, though, they are designed to work with a computer. If you decide
against carrying a computer, the advantages of a digital camera will be
    minimal.

I have Nikon film cameras and Nikon and Olympus digitals. Of them all, my
favorite is the Olympus. IMO, 30 years ago, Olympus made pretty good SLRs,
as did Minolta. But the Minolta models were substantially heavier.

I recommend you do some research online. My favorite site is Digital Camera
Resource <http://www.dcresource.com>. He reviews most cameras and provides
links where you can purchase them most cheaply.

Two things to keep in mind about buying digital cameras:
    - they all come with inadequate memory storage. You'll want to buy a larger
    card.
    - you will need methods to recharge batteries, and should consider extra
batteries for your camera so that you'll always have a fresh set.

    Good luck!

One more thing...keep your wife happy...it will pay off later!
