Yeppers! I remember still the first
formal Captain position I gained!
The skipper of an eighty-seven foot
snapper/grouper fisher....
which spent 14-21 days a'sea
cruising the edge of the continental
shelf from Fernandina Florida to the
Carolinas....
became ill, could not stand.... he asked
me~ the youngest (20) crewman aboard if
it was true that I could navigate using
Loran A.... I had just been discharged
from the USCG stationed for near three
years in the Pacific...
I piped up a hardy: "Aye!"
He said: "Take us home then, there's a Nor'Easter
blowin in & we got near 25 ton o'red snapper aboard.
I go below!"
That Nor'Easter saw the bottoms torn from three of the fleet
on the jettys....two capsized sunk 150nm offshore.....
one sunk after fire ravaged her a'sea.
I brought her back safely to port, discharged cargo....
and when he awoke he said: "Young Captain, for that is
what now you are..... she is yours.... treat her well &
she'll do as well with you. Always pat her on the fanny
when you go ashore... kiss her on the nose when you return."
He also said: "Never bail from jail your deckmen....
always bail out your cookie..... for the cookie is the heart
of this vessel and shall draw the best crew from the docks,
the brothels & the bars!"
She and I went on to break all records that season.....
She was a Greek built (Tiliakos~ if I remember correctly)
vessel..... we caught more snapper than any vessel in the
history of the Fernandina fleet!
I still pat my craft on the fanny when goin' ashore~
I still kiss 'em on the nose when returnin'~
