Yesterday my wife had her normal annual eye exam. Nothing except for
new frames was expected. However, the doctor told her that she had
the very early beginnings of cataracts. She was so surprised that she
didn't think to ask questions such as if it was both eyes, how long
till something needed to be done, etc. Or, if she was told, she
didn't remember. When she told me, apart from the normal reactions
one has to this kind of news, I started to wonder how this kind of
thing would effect our future plans to cruise. We will, needless to
say, be asking the doctor some more questions since it is not
something to be taken lightly and could well have a great effect on
the rest of our lives.
My question to the list is: have you had experience with cataracts
and how has that effected cruising whether long distance or coastal?
Is it a "deal stopper" or not? Last I knew, I think the surgery was
to replace the lens in the eye with a plastic one. Is this something
that has changed and is it something that would preclude her from
cruising? What's the effect of the marine environment and all the
molds, etc. that grow there? Is there some procedure, etc. to follow
when one has cataracts or has had cataract surgery and then goes
cruising? Any other advice and comments would be welcome, including
questions to ask the doctor, since we are just starting to gather
information about what to do.
TIA
Rick
