My self-discipline isn't always too good, but I try to keep a DR track and
also fix my position (and correct the DR track) when I can with a hand
bearing compass (not helpful in open water, obviously), then use the GPS to
confirm. Before I start out on a long, blue-water passage I'll have a
sextant on board and enough skill to use it in at least a rudimentary
fashion. I'm trying to not become solely dependent on the GPS, which will
undoubtedly someday fail at the moment I need it most.
Also note that however new a chart may be, the potential for error is still
there. Some charts still contain data collected a century ago. Nigel
Calder's written some good articles (maybe even a whole book?) on that subject.
Just my $.02,
