We have a Simrad aka Robinson AP20 which is a below decks autopilot. We use
a Whitlock rotary drive but generally people use hydraulic drives. It seems
    to work very well.
My experience with this is limited to coastal cruising, however we did use it
in the Annapolis Bermuda race--it was on about 80% of the time during the
race and totally during our return--I hand steered about 5 hours and that was
just for the shear joy of it. Also have used it on a couple of cruises from the
Chesapeake to Maine and found it completely reliable. We use it on a Kelly
Peterson 46 which weighs close to 20 tons when it is fully loaded.

Friends have used a Monitor wind vane on a Tayana 37 and were very pleased
with it over the 8 years they were cruising.
