Hi all, My cruising days were in the '60s, but maybe I can still contribute.
RE: New Sails: In 1968 I bought sails from A Lam, the sailmaker for Cheoy
Lee. Very satisfactory and fast delivery. Also got used sails from Bacon;
I found their rating conservative.
RE: How Much Anchor Chain: The Van Dorn book is excellent ("According to
Wm. Van Dorn, Ph.D an oceanographer with Scripps Institution of Oceanography
in La Jolla, Calif., the 250' of nylon is to take shock load off the 250' of
chain..... his recommendation, after studies documented in his book,
Oceanography and Seamanship."--from message 1018.) Important point is to
have a shock-absorbing rode. Only the weight of the chain that is off the
bottom supplies this until conditions stretch it bar-taught (hence the
advantage of adding a "sentinel"), so the deeper the anchorage, the better
suited it is for (all) chain rode. The book concludes that equal amounts of
chain and rope is best compromise. I had 70ft of 5/16 chain on my 25ft
Vertue, the idea being that in most anchorages it would all be off the boat
when anchored, and not grinding in the roller. From '70 to '73 I sailed
from California to Africa via Hawaii and the S.Pacific, and would have felt
safe with half that much chain. The chain was as important for helping to
get the adequate-but-light Danforth 12-H anchor started burying, and for
chafe protection, than it was for cushioning.
I spent a year in the Galapagos ('65-'66) and got to know the Angermeyers
and the De Roys well. Does anyone have more recent news? Please e-mail me
