I really enjoy reading about people planning/cruising in the North (or the far South for that matter), you surely will see breathtaking nature and wildlife in a lot of unspoilt places. I am from Sweden and have sailed along the Baltic coast of Sweden into the Bothian Gulf and over to Finland several times in my 30 years of sailing. I have also lived in Norway, on the West Coast for seven years, and done a lot of sailing there as well. The clean nature and waters of the Scandinavian coasts are always commented by guests sailors we meet. In the late 70-s and early 80-s I lived 3 years in Greenland. Talk about unspoilt nature!!
Just a few comments on advise from the other guys. Ice and Glass fiber is NO problem. The problem is where you anchor and if you have a lot of drifting ice at this place. If you anchor up in a place where you are protected from winds, that can force the ice to heap up and to push your boat around, then there are no problems. I Sweden we normally take our boats up from the water during the winter season, but in Norway and Greenland the boats remained in the water the year around and I promise you we had thick ice there during the winters. I never saw an ice-damaged boat in sheltered waters or marinas. In Norway I had a 30 foot Albin Scampi in the water year around, I never saw a scratch from the ice. It never froze solid between the hull and the ice I was walking on around the boat. We are here talking about 20 to 60 cm solid ice. I did not have any heating in the boat, but just the little difference in temperature from inside to outside kept a slot about an inch open between the hull
and the ice shelf. The ice closest to the boat was smooth as if it was polished.
One does not need an over dimensioned heater for the boat size if you live aboard during the winter in the north, but a reliable one. The other most important thing is insulation. Have the boat insulated from the waterline and up, all of it. This is to keep the condense at a minimum.
My wife and I are planning to start live-aboard full time from about 2005. We want to cruise the world, but outside from the beaten tracks. Greenland again is a must (on our way west), then down the Canadian Coast, Bermuda, The West Indies, through Panama and up the West coast of the States, further to Vancouver and Alaska. Of course the Pacific Islands, but on the whishlist is Southern Chile and Patagonia. Anyway please visit our site http://beneteauidylle1550.com ,
