Once you are north of 60º in summer you get long days and short nights which makes navigation quite straightforward. In the open ocean you can get bad weather so you must be prepared to weather a gale. Whilst there are many unspoilt anchorages and charming fishing ports, sometimes distances are long between marinas and support services.

The west coast of Norway is charming but distances between ports are long and the coast is somewhat exposed.

For your first voyage may I suggest the Gulf of Bothnia in particular the Aland Islands between Stockholm and Turku. There are 6500 islands and they are well frequented by the Swedes and Finns so facilities are not lacking and distances between anchorages is not excessive.

    Hope this helps

    Philip Ouvry
