[world-cruising] How Much Anchor Chain?

We are in the process of fitting out our new catamaran for cruising
and need to order anchor chain soon. If anyone out there has found
themselves with too little chain, please reply with how much you
think you should have had and where you were when you felt short-
    chained (pun intentional).

Conversely, if anyone is carrying more than they have ever used,
please reply as well with how much you think is appropriate and your
    general cruising area.

Our preliminary long-term plans are to spend next summer cruising the
San Juan Islands in Puget Sound, cruise to Alaska the following
summer, then work our way down the West Coast of the U.S., visit the
Galapagos Islands, transit the Panama Canal and spend a few years in
the Caribbean. After that, who knows. We want to be sure to carry
enough chain to be safe in all forseeable conditions but not weigh
    the boat down unnecessarily.

Your comments and recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    John & Lela Bickford
