Hmmmmmm, I guess John didn't see this one.
Reference GPS being shut down, I would recommend folks look at
the national plan for SCANTNA (Security Control of Air Traffic and
Navigational Aids).
Look it up. It's real, it's useable, it's not just "doomsday" stuff.
Scantana has been around for many years and has been implemented only
a very few times, BUT it ~has~ been implemented and with the recent
events involving airborne terrorism could well be implemented more often
in the foreseeable future. It was partially implemented on 9/11.
When full SCANTANA is implemented ~all~ aviation related navaids in the
country are shut down to preclude their use by possible enemy or
terrorist activities.
Civil Aviation is thereby pretty much grounded for the period.
Systems shut down under SCANTANA include, among others, LORAN,
VOR, TACAN, NDB, and yes, now - GPS. All are systems that aviators
use to navigate their aircraft. More and more aircraft use GPS every
day. It's more convenient and accurate than many of the older systems.
My advice, keep the sextant (grin). Even when using "dead reckoning"
one often needs to input course adjustments.
Dave J
A CAP pilot who has to study how to operate under SCANTANA
and, yes, a sailor.

Hi Ian
I am thinking of buying in South Africa and sailing home to Oz.
What type of boat did you get and how did you locate it

Hi John,
You were going to get back to me re sailing this route January
/February. We
were thinking of not going below 35 and wondering if you have any
recommendations on a possible route.
Regards, Ian & Suzy

i have seen dozens of taffrail logs for sale in second hand marine
stores. when you buy one new, it usually comes with more than one
¨fish.¨ the ones for sale in second hand stores usually only have one
fish, the reason, they make great fishing lures. in other words, a
large fish can eat your speed meter. a chip log may be a good
alternative, measuring as accurately as possible the time it takes to
pass a chip of wood from bow to stern, then doing the math to figure
out your boat speed. there´s a formula for that but i dont know it.
does anyone have that formula?
that would be something good to know.
however, i think it is important o note that both these methods
measure speed through the water and dont take into consideration the
current which can make a substantial difference in some places.
