We use a ring binder filled with pages we run off on the computer. Each
daily page has a header for:
    persons on board
    date
    day of the week
    time of sunrise / set
    times of tides

In the main block it's pretty much open space. When coastal we just jot
notes like "left Los Angeles at 0900. Arrived Catalina xxx" When making
passage off soundings we try to maintain hourly entries of:

    Course
    speed (estimated)
    log reading
    lat / lon from gps
    wind strength (estimated)
    wind direction
    any notes on sea condition

We don't record barometer readings but I suspect we would if we were in
    latitudes of suspect weather.

Note also that we don't have speed or wind instruments so that data is
    eyeball estimated.

We will make non-hourly entries to mark special events: "1023 - Point
    Fermin abeam 3 miles...."
