    Janice,

It is hitting midnight here so I do not know if you are understanding my
original post (the brain needs sleep). The log I mentioned is a ships
log - one that tells you your speed and distance!

But for a deck log, use just a normal A4 or your US equivalent with a
few columns drawn in with the basics:
    Date/Time
    Course Ordered
    Course Steered
    Log Reading
    Wind & Weather
    Barometer
    Remarks/Notes

You can always add more info into your log book about engine run time,
oil changes, radio messages or how bad you thought the captain/skipper
was at making the last meal. It's up to you.

I have done many ocean crossings and on all boats, with the exception of
one, we have only kept one log book with the information noted above.
The exception was a boat we took to Rio de Janeiro where we had a radio
log book as well as the deck log - don't know why, as it was never used
but the owner had placed it be on board before we departed.

((There is no log? The reliance on
GPS alone is not such a good idea and to work out a DR, you need a
    log.))

Exactly, specifically, and in detail, please tell me the information you
have in your log books. And, is there more than one -- for repairs,
    maintenance, for actual voyaging.

I've looked at the ones for sale at a local toy-store (a chain that
    caters to weekend-warrior-types, versus a boat-boat store). I wasn't
    impressed.

So, what's in your log book? What do you wish was there? What do you
    record? May I see?

    J
