Being a belt and braces man myself, I totally agree with the concept of
carrying a backup means of navigation. There is a saying that there are old
pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.I tend
to think the same may apply to mariners. I have seen some of the contempt
that professional mariners have for yachtsmen because they depend far too
much on luck and fail to avail themselves of the most common backups. I also
listen to the boating mishaps on the evening news and almost all of them are
due to negligence, failure to use due caution, failure to prepare boat and
gear for system failures, and ignoring basic safety rules. Accidents are
usually the result of a chain of failures not just one.
Interestingly enough, all navy and commercial ships must carry chronometers,
sextants, and be qualified to use them. There must be a reason.
I carry two GPS receivers and a backup sextant. Actually I regard the GPS as
a backup to the sextant.
