Hmmmmmm,
Reference GPS being shut down, I would recommend folks look at
the national plan for SCANTNA (Security Control of Air Traffic and
Navigational Aids).
Look it up. It's real, it's useable, it's not just "doomsday" stuff.
Scantana has been around for many years and has been implemented only
a very few times, BUT it ~has~ been implemented and with the recent
events involving airborne terrorism could well be implemented more often
in the foreseeable future.
When full SCANTANA is implemented ~all~ aviation related navaids in the
country are shut down to preclude their use by possible enemy or
terrorist
activities. Civil Aviation is thereby pretty much grounded for the
period.
Systems shut down under SCANTANA include, among others, LORAN,
VOR, TACAN, NDB, and yes, now - GPS. All are systems that aviators
use to navigate their aircraft. More and more aircraft use GPS every
day.
It's more convenient and accurate than many of the older systems.
My advice, keep the sextant (grin). Even when using "dead reckoning"
one often needs to input course adjustments.

A pilot who has to study how to operate under SCANTANA
and, yes, a sailor.
