I only turn my handheld GPS on once per hour to confirm my DR. Excellent
practice should I lose it (for any reason - batteries, splash, overboard,
etc.) Pilots routinely practice without various combinations of instruments
and I plan to be prepared in case of total electrical failure on board. Full
or part electrical failure I think is more likely than GPS shutdown. That
said, I would probably take a sextant and tables on a cross ocean voyage
just to give me something to do at noon.
