Actually, a large enough solar flare could shut down or interrupt GPS
communications. Flares are a worry in the satellite telecommunications
industry and have shut down satellites on a number of occasions. The GPS
signal is an amazingly puny signal, much more susceptible to a solar flare
than most communications satellites.
For the record, I have one wired in GPS,. one battery powered GPS and my
third GPS is a Gray Plastic Sextant.
