I think the point I would like to make is that each sailor will determine what equipment is "right" for their needs. Bare bones or full tilt, living the life is the goal. If an electric winch handle makes the difference between sailing and being tied to a dock, then by all means get the electric winch handle. It wasn't too many years ago that furling jib systems were scorned. Quite common now.
At times, I have been irritated at the owners of those fantastic boats that NEVER leave the dock. But for that owner, maybe ownership, tinkering, and dockside events are satisfaction enough. The freedom, independence, self reliance that make me want to sail, may keep another at the dock. The Sea is one of the few remaining endevors in life where the "real rules" are very old and very simple. And just as important, the punishment for breaking the rules, is the result of breaking the rules. There is no tort system when you are alone in the water 300 miles from land.

I do find your Radar - yes, GPS/chartplotter probably/no, interesting. I may have underestimated the value of radar. I will admit most of the boats I look at have both, but never considered the lack of radar to be a must have or a deal breaker. One owner/seller bragged that with the right adjustments he could pick out lobster floats on flat water with his radar system.

    Jim,

Those who may not have access to the list is why I put in the part
about those that knew someone that was not on the list or could not
get to the list. I thought perhaps that if they are out there with
little onboard, they might not be able to have access to the online
groups such as this frequently or at all but someone else might know
about them and be able to tell their story. Some of our list is out
there cruising or unavailable to reach their mail as is evidenced by
their being in bounce status with "over quota" inboxes. Instead of
unsubing them as some lists do, I keep them onboard for quite a long
time till they hopefully come back and empty their boxes again.

I'm familiar with the other group you mentioned. After the first
couple of months, it has quieted down a bit not unlike this list.
Probably for some of the same reasons.

I know what you mean about wanting your bells and whistles. I would
like a few myself but I think I will be drawing the line somewhere.
For instance: radar-yes and electronic charts-no; wind vane-yes and
electronic autopilot-maybe. Sextant-yes and backup to the sextant
GPS-probably; backup to the backup GPS-no. OTOH, a stable platform is
essential as well as smallish sails, space aboard for us to turn
around in, and a solid (reliable as opposed to seized solid :-) )
    diesel.

Having previously lived aboard for several years, I got beyond the
flint/down camping stage and find that is what most people equate
living aboard to be. It can be but it doesn't have to be. If I had to
go that far down the line to get back aboard, I have to admit, I
would probably not think about it more than once and then only very
briefly. That said, there are probably people out there that are
doing it with little more than that and I applaud them for being able
to do that and enjoy it. I wish them well in every way.

Good luck with the boat search. Please keep us apprised of how the
search goes, what you find, and how you fit her out, not to mention
    where you cruise.
